  • Distros geared towards multimedia development?

Anyone know of any distros that are packed with multimedia development tools? Or are there to few tools to form a distro around and I'm better off doing it myself?

    Thanks,
    Thien

There's DeMuDi and ReHmudi . Also, Gentoo has lots of mmedia apps in its portage system.
Also check this article and this one about Film Gimp.

Hope this helps, and let us know how/what apps are working, after you decide on your distro.

I read up on Film GIMP and that's what made me think about a mm distro

It may be a while before I get everything setup though once school started I haven't had time to play around with anything. I currently have Mandrake 8.1, but for the life of me I can't get all the stuff I need to get xawtv compiled, I think it has to do with the xfree86-devel package that came with the distro. So I planned on waiting for 9.1 and updating, but now I'm thinking I should just get a different distro altogether.

Thanks for the links these look good.

I like the idea of Agnula (DeMuDi, ReHMuDi) as a definition of a common ground for multimedia software.
The progress of these projects surely is to the benefit of all distributions.

AFAIK, the FilmGimp is a very specialized tool for the specific needs of image manipulation in the film industry. When talking about multimedia, I'm rather thinking of software like Cinelerra

Debian is the answer, at least as far as xawtv goes, works flawlessly here, 'apt-get install xawtv' works like a charm. Though I personally use Zapping which is the tv viewer for gnome. KwinTV also is in the debian repository. All DeMudi is, is a standard debian install, that automatically will install the multimedia stuff (at least as far as I can tell) they're also working on a Deb-Med for medical institutions.

FilmGIMP is useful for rotoscoping, last time I did that for a school project I had to capture each frame individually, edit them in a picture editor I was familiar with, and then import it into Premiere, because I didn't have any tools explicitely for doing that. So it would be nice if I can do that stuff with FilmGIMP since I'm now learning how to use GIMP.

I really want to try out Cinelerra too, much rather use that then Premiere 5. Although my machine is no where near the recommended specs .

Anyone know if there is anything similiar to VirtualDub? Just an easy but powerful tool for basic editing and compressing?

Well that is why I'm looking for a distro, because I really don't know all the tools out there that I should take a look at.
