  • quality of clips

I was watching som clips from the gallery and noticed that on alot of them there was severe loss in visual quality. I was curious to kno what causes this. Is it due to the converson of analog to digital when capturing to a computer. If i was using a firewire, and a digital camcorder would i have to be overly concerned about quality loss this severe?

    Hi,

The reason is that filesize has to be drastically reduced to make it possible for you to view more than a few frames. If you imagine that at the best quality that a Marvel (for instance) can capture, you use up 2Gb in appx 11 minutes. Most people will only want to download 2 or 3 Mb (although some of the AVIs are longer than that). In order to get the filesizes down, drastic compression and/or frame size/rate reduction (often both) has to be performed.

Inevitably this leads to loss of quality (try it yourself at home). What is often amazing is how MUCH quality some folks manage to retain given the harsh reality of streaming video.
