Will Win ME cure the 2GB file capture limit?

  • #2
    I doubt it.

Even if the 2GB limit was sorted, FAT32 has a 3.9GB file size limitation.

      Thanks,
As a matter of interest, doesn't BEOS support unlimuted file sizes?

Yes BeOS has "unliminted" file sizes but...
no decent editing apps or capture hardware as far as I can tell

But if you like to swim upstream, BeOS might be fun.

Windows 2000 would be the solution if
The MS DV codec was worth a shit or Matrox would produce WDM capture drivers that worked for the Marvels

I've captured a 9GB file under w2k with NTFS using ULEAD Media Studio Pro and a cheap ADS Pyro firewire card. Its basically useless because of problems in the MS DV audio. Ulead has a patch that fixes it for some (most?) but I've not had a chance to try the patch yet. Hopefully this weekend.

        Maybe we're geting close.

AVI_IO and 2GB video chunks (~10min at best quality) is a decent kludge for win9x in the meantime.

The MS DV codec problems aren't limited to audio. The color shifts after a couple generations of recompression, as might happen applying filters or effects, can be horrid.

Re-compression is not recommended by Ulead.

All I can say is judge for yourselves at http://www.price98.freeserve.co.uk/page14.htm

The MS codec may not be perfect under re-compression tests but in real life editing where re-compression is not selected but titles, overlays, F/X, transitions are.

Apologies for any jpeg corrruption but all the pictures were saved the same way.
