    Yippy! Now I just have to see where the stink I put my old serial number and password from the first encoder!

      First problem: it doesn't properly recognize DV type1 files.

      It misreports them as not being an even multiple of 16 wide and then it scales them to 96x64 before encoding them to DVD specs. This of course reduces the quality not a little.

      DV type2 and HuffYUV at 720x480 are not misreported and they encode rather nicely to DVD @6000 kbps CBR (feature limited so I couldn't test VBR).

      Speed: ~4 min/1000 frames

        We are sorry to say but there is not a price discount for Panasonic MPEG1 Encoder users since we believe this new encoder is very much different from the MPEG1 Encoder. However, please understand that we did try our best to lower the price.
        This came right off their BBS from a user request regarding upgrade pricing.

        Oh well, TMPGEnc seems to be working quite well.

            Doc Mordrid: Thanks, once again, taking a first look and giving early feedback.

            Sure doesn't look like a good start for this tool. I had high hopes, but, it would appear they just want to generate some revenue. I went into their site and my password doesn't work anymore. Anyway, selling on an non-secure site is the best indicator of how much this company really cares, these days. I'll wait to judge the quality of the encoder, if I ever get it.

              After playing a bit more I find the following;

              1. the DV type 1 issue (really odd since I mainly use Panasonic DV cams )

              2. rendering speed of ~4+ min/1000 frame is about the same as TMPGEnc Plus (Panasonic is a few percent faster, but not enough to overcome the other limitations)

              3. Panasonic has fewer rendering options and featuers. This is where TMPGEnc's Advanced menu, more comprehensive options & larger list of available profiles really shine.

              Sticking with TMPGEnc.

                Thanks for "doing the work" for us Doc. It's guys like you that allow guys like me to do other foolish stuff with my spare time.

                I still can't believe that Panasonic isn't cutting registered owners of their original Mpeg1 encoder a break. From what you have reported they really could be missing the boat on getting their product out, especially when you think about the lead TMPGEnc and others have on them.

                Someone in marketing/sales should have their head examined over this one.

                  Me too. Still looking forward to their multi-pass (greater than 2) server version.
