Attention Pyro Users : Flawless Timeline Playback?

Couple of quick questions:

Please advise if you have flawless timeline playback
using Pyro and MediaStudio Pro 6.

I am interested in you Windows 2000 users with NTFS configured systems.

I am *also* interested in...

a) Your motherboard chipset
b) Your processor (AMD or Intel)
c) Your camcorder brand

The new 1+Ghz AMD Thunderbird processors look
tempting, but I'm wondering about problems I've read about concerning Via motherboard chipsets.

How about the new motherboards that feature AMD-brand chipsets? Anybody tried one of those yet?

Since applying the DVpatchII I've gotten perfect timeline playback and export to tape function. Before that, twas' useless.

Windows 2000 Pro (SP1 not installed).
ASUS P2B -- Intel BX2 chipset
PIII-500
256 MB RAM
Fasttrack66 RAID NTFS 2X 40GB Maxtors.
AGP Voodoo3 2000 video
ISA Soundblaster16
Hauppauge Win/TV for analog captures
ADS Pyro
Netgear 310fx 10/100 ethernet
Sony TR7000 D8 camcorder.

ACPI seems to have put about everything PCI on the same IRQ.

Unless you need better performance than the "sweet spot" of PIII CPU prices for something other than video editing, I'd stick with Intel CPU and chip set for w2k at the present time.

I think you'll have to do a non-standard w2k install for non-intel chipsets as I think some vender supplied drivers are crutial for most w2k installs on non-Intel chips.

Unless MS produces a w2k distribution CD with the service paks pre-installed (or at least updated drivers) w2k will reamin more difficult than it should be for non-Intel chipsets. To my knowledge they never did this for NT4.

IF you can get your hot new T-bird system with w2k pre-installed then it might be worth a chance, otherwise I'd play it safe unless you are an installation problem Guru.

I'd like to hear non-Intel w2k and DV editing success stories, so far there seems to be more people asking than trying.

My limited experience with w2k on non-Intel (video editing was not even considered) suggests that its hopeless without the proper third party drivers, check the MB vendor's website for updates first if you are "rolling your own" and buying by price, the CD included in the motherboard is not likely to be current.

Jeez, I need help with just capturing. I'm running a Pyro with VS4 no probs, an installed MSP6 a couple of weeks back. It controls the DV Cam no prob, but will NOT reognise the incoming stream. I installed the patch on the MSP6 CD with no luck.

Cam is Canon MV200, OS W98SE, CU P2 266 on Gigabyte BX chipset.

Haven't had time to play yet, so probably something minor I overlooked. Problem is that I don't have much time to play...

Are you using the TI 1394 drivers?

MS 1394 & the Canon MV200 don't get on in PAL land. You may get away with MS 1394 in Win ME (Some do, some don't)

Just a thought, perhaps you mean that MS pro 6 doesn't recognise the captured video, if thats the problem, download the DV Smartplay patch, it won't give you timeline playback but it will let Direct show co-exist with a DV soft codec.

I'm having trouble "printing to tape" from MSP6. Capturing and editing work great.
Previewing works great, but seems slightly jerky and a little fuzzy (half size & half rate?) It looks like the preview is at 360x240 and 15fps. Is that right? Is there any way to choose the preview options like in MSP 5.2?

I have upgraded to MSP 6.0.0.2.
When I print to tape, the device control starts the camera recording, but no image or sound makes it to the tape. I believe that you are supposed to be able to watch/listen to the recording on the LCD while it's going, but the LCD stays blue during the recording.

I've also tried rendering the project to a new AVI (DV type 1) and printing that file to tape, but I get the same symptoms.

I'm running Win98 (original) on a ABit BH6 with a Pyro board to a Canon Optura Pi.
I have a Celeron 566 with 192MB (running the bus at 83MHz for OC'ing to 707MHz).
My suspicion is that I need to upgrade from the original Win98 to SE, Me, or 2000?
What do you all think?
If you think I should upgrade, to which one?
(I'm thinking 2000)

PS ADS support site talks about Win98Gold and SE, but doesn't mention the original Win98. Is Gold the same thing as the original?

Windows 98 original (Gold) lacks full support
for IEEE 1394 so - yes - you probably would
be well-advised to upgrade.

Lots have Windows 98SE working fine. (Me, too.)

But I like Windows 2000 on paper. It'll be my next OS.

Win98 Gold & First edition are the same as you said.

To have timeline playback you need to use MS 1394 device drivers, this option isn't available under Win 98 (Gold)

There are preview options in the MSP6 Video Capture module, although the default is full screen.

Capturing with the Pyro is more akin to transferring, the video on the computer is a direct copy of the camcorder tape.

If you didn't have dropped frames you should be able to play it back A1, Windows Media Player needs to be set to play full screen for best results which may be reliant on a newer qdv.dll file.

I have probably confused the issue but it's hard to cover every eventuallity on a post.
