heh, Huge download - 5GB!

I am downloading SuSe Linux 7.2 right now It is a massive, time-consuming download. I started yesterday at 10:30pm GMT -8. It's been 17 hours now. I have 1.66GB to go, heh, hehe, haha, HEHEHAHA!!! MWAHAHAHA!!! I decided to try Linux again. I hear the installs are gettting pretty good. Plus it will be nice when I work form home and I need to work in the lab. Currently I use Reflection X which is a UNIX emulator for Windows. I am very grateful for cable right now. Unfortunately I think i am averaging 70kpps but sometimes it jumps up to 120-200kpps.

My first thought was 5GB!? Rip it to DivX and then I'll download the iso.

What is divX? I've never bothered to find out. I vaguely know that it was some kind of movie thing that didn't work out???

Wousl anyone know the best way to copy this 5GB to CD? Prefferably I would like to know a way to copy the 7 discs just as you would buy them in the store? I know that I can just copy the files to CD and it will prompt me for the next Cd but I have this feeling that it wouldn't be the greatest idea. thanks for any help

DivX is the hacked mpeg4 codec that uses mp3 audio encoding.

So, I guess if I'm understanding your post correctly, you're going to use Linux to connect to your Unix box instead of Windows-base Xwin terminal emulator? How is ReflectionX? I've been using Starnet's XWin32 at work and like it a lot.

The Linux installs are getting way better. RedHat 7.2 is really slick, and XFree86 4.03 with my G400Max is fantastic....with dual head. I installed Suse 7.1 awhile back and that was pretty painless too, although for me soundcard stuff is a major hassel. Finally got my trusty Soundblaster16 working fine (knew I kept that for a reason), all though system sounds in KDE2.0 don't work right.

My concern is that with each Linux release, the performance in KDE or Genome gets worse and worse.

:0 I forgot one important thing. I VPN into work through my ISP. In order for me to accomplish this I run a proprietary VPN dialer on my machine adn then use softoken to get my password. This is all great except for one small tiny little detail....it's not supported in under LINUX!!! hmmm...I I think I could get the VPN connection to work, but what about softoken? I dont know how I could generate password on two machines? Maybe I need two accounts??? I know! I could request for the DES gold card. This is basically a physical version of softoken. That way I could have one card for whatever I want. I dont know if my company will support this though??? <sigh> The trouble is beginning already...

JR, ReflectionX isnt too bad. It does have it's problemns since it is another bloat-ware program. I notice some memory leaks in Win2k under certain conditions. It gets the job done. Thanks for the luck on the install, lol it seems as though everyone says that when installing linux, hehe

Linux was one of my least favorite classes in College... (The teacher was a zealot and I failed because I didn't embrace it like the next best thing.... although my friend who scored way lower on the tests passed... but he kissed that guys @$$ like there was no tommorrow)

I learned on slackware and I decided to try debian... so far its not much more than a waste of 3 CD's (It only took 7 tries to install... it won't work properly with the SIS 6326 Vidcard I have (Even though it has an X_server that is designed to work with it.) and It has major problems booting off my SCSI HD... although I think having to use bootdisks is a refreshing visit with the past


Maybe I will give another distro a try to see what its like... (Either that or try installing this at work on a different system to see if its a conflict with my hardware or just a configuation error.)

At least I have the boot disk and the command line to fart around with... (For now anyways...)

In their marketing scheme, you essentially got the DIVX DVD disc for a reduced price over regular DVD's, but with only a couple of viewing sessions free. If you wanted to watch it again beyond that, you had to pay for each viewing session ie pay per view. Just like going to the video store and having to rent the blasted thing each time, but with the exception you owned the bloody disc! (not in their mind you didn't)

I for one am glad this marketing BS died, but even more happy the codec survived.

Circuity City was one of the major contributors to the divx format. (And the only store that sold the divx format capable players) They took a huge loss on it. I'm sure RCA did too, but GE (parent company of RCA) can shrug the losses off.

Only reason the mass public knew of divx was due to Circuit City, hence it was "their" format.

Outside of contributing capital, Circuit City didn't have a damn thing to do with Divx other than try to profit from the format by being the sole retailer of RCA's Divx products.

BTW, Thompson owns RCA... their North American headquarters was about 3 miles from where I use to live in Indy and I know many of their engineers.

Divx was a DVD development which allowed specially made DVD players to connect to a phone line and play DIVX DVD titles on a pay-per-play basis. The format was owned by Circuit City who pulled the plug in July, 1999 after only a short run.

True, but that was all (ie money)...

The call in was to Circuit City so you could watch it again after the nominal 3 views... but that was all. Since RCA had nothing to do with retail selling of Divx disks who else would you expect to call? CC did pull the plug in Aug '99 after dismal sales, cause the buying public rejected their BS marketing scheme... and CC spent millions on the commercials trying to cram it down the publics throat.

That was a risk that RCA wasn't willing to take... if it failed, then they certainly wouldn't be taking the fall for this gross miscalculation.
