  • Windows 2000 event viewer error message

    Just changed to a KT266 motherboard from the famed Abit KT133 A. Everything is running fine however I noticed the following error in the event viewer.
    PciPort service failed to start due the following error Invalid parameter.
    Looked for this on technet but as normal this came up with nothing.

                I really don't know man.... i've looked in the microsoft knowledge base and found several even 7000 but none of the specifically talk about pciport... they talk more about a service that has'nt started correctly probably due to a corruption. This might be that your the first to have that pci thing problem...

                  Have you tried re-installing the Service Pack if it's already installed or installing it if it's not.

                    When you swapped motherboards, did you re-install the OS from scratch, or just let it re-detect everything? I've seen weird things similar to this when trying to swap out a motherboard without reinstalling.

                      I re-installed the service pack and I didn't do a clean OS install.
                      Everything seems to work okay. However I'd like to know what this pciport thing is it's not under services and I can't find a direct referance under technet or I haven't worded it correctly.

                        I found this entry in the registry.

                        Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

                        [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\Root\ LEGACY_PCIPORT]
                        "NextInstance"=dword:00000001

                        [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\Root\ LEGACY_PCIPORT\0000]
                        "Service"="PciPort"
                        "Legacy"=dword:00000001
                        "ConfigFlags"=dword:00000000
                        "Class"="LegacyDriver"
                        "ClassGUID"="{8ECC055D-047F-11D1-A537-0000F8753ED1}"
                        "DeviceDesc"="PciPort"

                        Does this mean anything to anyone. I've checked three other win2k machines and they don't have these entries. I'm wondering if it's anything to do with the onboard sound which is disabled and never had the drivers installed.

                            A suggestion

                            In Device Manager choose "View" -> "Show hidden devices".
                            You'll then get "Non-Plug and Play Drivers" showing in the device list.
                            It could be listed here???
