  • Cool looking products...

This thread isn't designed to debate product stuff and theory, just show off cool stuff. For starters, Shunyata cable. Never even heard of the company until 20 minutes ago, but damn that's cool looking cable:

    Big, big power cord:

Hehe, I remember some huge discussions about power cables for hifi equipment, how an insanely expensive pure copper cord would improve your signal quality, and I couldn't help wondering how 3 feet of high quality cable could make up for the miles of cheap cabling from your plug to the power company

Assuming you get a dedicated audio line, power cable upto 11 guage can make a difference. Otherwise, not worth much, except that wonderful placebo effect.

If you want to drop $150 USD for a cool looking Imac cable, more power to you

I've never personally tried an after-market power cable before. I will someday I'm sure. I'm just crazy enough to try.

The newest very expensive gadget for HT's is power regeneration. They take that crappy power signal from thos miles of crappy copper and regenerate the signal into a 'pure' sine wave at exactly 115-125 V(ac) at 50-60 Hz. From there you use your 3-6 ft of overly expensive copper to make things sound nice

Some poeple just have too much money. I just wish I was one of them.

Still doesn't make up for the slack DC current after the AC-DC conversion process

I would defenitly need something like that, the power signal in my apartment is sooo crappy that I thought that my pctv card was broken....

Wouldn't a fairly decent line conditioner or..

UPS from APC work fine for most usages? *shrug* I know there are a lot of anal ppl out there who would have to have it EXACTLY in specs... But for the majority of use "normal users," a UPS product should work fine.

/Edit: Maybe someone can design some PCB circuts to "cheaply" regulate the UPS/line conditioner to "properly regulate" the electricity to specs? Just tossing out some ideas. Don't flame this poor boy over *possible* ignorance.

Oh sure, put me on the spot ...

I will attempt to explain the gist of the conversation, but more than likely I will miss a lot in the translation...scratch that...I'm going into layman's terms for this one.

The gist of the deal is, unless you have a stellar, top-of-the-line amp (with the expection of a few amps that have built in power regeneration), a power regen will do you no good, as the amp cannot handle any decently complex music without suffering from their own internal power supply problems. In those cases, a nice power filter will help keep spikes and some garbage from the line, but a regen won't be very advantageous.

                        As for UPS's...

The problem with most UPS devices is that they do not regen the AC power (i.e. run off battery power) unless the incoming AC power is dropped. Go here for details on the different types of UPS devices:

It’s a rule of thumb to “never cheap out on your PSU”. So read on to find which PSU you can buy today is the best.

As explained here, only true 'Online' UPS's (which cost more than an audio AC regen or filter) actually continuously regenerate the AC signal off the battery.

In addition, a high-end stereo will demand more power from a UPS than the UPS is designed to handle. A good 2 channel x 200 W amp will draw up to 550 W by itself, which would require you to have a 900 VA UPS just for the amp. It would be more financially practical to just get a nice power filter.

that would work, but batteries don't cough up the current like caps will and why they add huge 1 farad caps to high end car stereos.
