  • Crucial Ram

I just got a 512 stick of Crucial ram and notice my computer freezing a lot. I ran memtest several times and it reports errors and also freezes after 21 minutes. Any ideas?

Either it's a faulty module or your memory timings are too aggresive.

Or it could even be your board. What board have you got?

If you ran a ram test and it fails it's more likely to be your ram, but change your settings and re-try the ramtest again to make sure.

Contact Crucial to get a replacement. They're very good in that department.

If you have another stick in there besides the 512 stick, try pulling it out and run the tests again.

If that's the case, and it passes the tests, then take the original stick of ram out and put in the new 512 stick.

If by chance that runs fine, then it's either a memory controller issue (usually only if you have 3 sticks though), or more likely the sticks of ram aren't matched. If that's the case, check to see if the modules are the same densities. Common problem.

Its only the 512 stick. Mobo is ECS K7S5A with a Duron 1.2Ghz. I'll change CAS to 3T and see if it makes a difference.

Yeah, a lot of Crucial RAM is timed at 2.5T, if your board makes you choose 2 or 3, you might be stuck with 3.

                  I have spoken.

Read the thing above, and draw conclusions...

besides, not many have cheap duron/K7S5A AND half gig of ddr ram...(it comes I guess from the fact that if you have one of the cheapest cpu and board (which btw supports sdr...) and want a lot of ram it's unlikely you'll go the ddr way...or maybe I'm little biased in drawing such conlusions because here ddr (especially the 512 modules) is still over 2 times the price of sdr...)

Well the mobo was just an extra one I had lying around from some systems I put together for a school. I bought the memory

                            1. Because it was cheap ($75.00)

                            2. I am planning to get a real mobo and CPU in short order probably Asus P4PE and 2.4G P4

                            3. My main use is video editing

And yes I have been using it with SDR of which I have lots of sticks lying around. BTW memtest reports errors at 291-298 MB before freezing even when set to 2.5T. And yes its DDR 2700

I think ECS K7S5A has some issues with 512Mb sticks. I do have 2 256Mb Crucial PC2100 and it works flawless.

It could also be bad ram, though. I consider Crucial top notch, but sh*t happens.
