No need for a subwoofer, just that the well rated computer speaker sets just come with one. If there is a set with just 2 speakers and have better quality than I'd probably prefer it.
You could check out the Diamond LoudMouse speakers, the satellites are TINY, with a very small "subwoofer". I've heard good things about their sound, but they're of course a bit lacking in deep bass and cannot reach very high volumes.
Quadral make some very good computer speakers BTW. The SAM 46 are very good (though not very stylish) - Prices I found vary between ~75 and ~100 EUR - no subwoofer (which I consider a plus), though you can get a matching one (SAM SUB 100) extra from Quadral (for 120 EUR. It's a real subwoofer, too, with a cutoff frequency variable between 70 (!) and 180 (not advisable) Hz).
If you want a SubSat system, The Quadral SM 2650 Cube seems to be quite good also, and quite cheap, too (~50 EUR).
there are a couple of Altec Lansing 2.1 or just 2 speakers that are not bad and might be cheaper.
some models that might fit you, 2.1 speakers 221@$50 and AVS300@$40, 2 speakers 220@$30 and AVS200@$20. This is from the their website.
Life is a bed of roses. Everyone else sees the roses, you are the one being gored by the thorns.
