  • MSI745 Ultra users still around?

I figured this would be the only forum in the world with people loyal/crazy enough to still own a 745U

So if any of you 745U owners are still out there, i only got one question: Have any of you got the board to boot at CL2 and >166 FSB? (That sentence doesn't sound right.) 166FSB and higher is no problem, CL2 is.

I want to upgrade my RAM since i've been playing with the FSB a bit lately, and want to run it FAST-CL2-5-2-2. So if anyone got this working tell me what RAM to buy and i'll do it! I was told though it can not be done with the SIS745 Chipset.

I understand your desire, but if you search those forums, you might find more data to work with those are just bookmarks i keep to reference against for troubleshooting issues on client's boards

Thop, with the 745 it's hit or miss depending on the chip quality the MB you have (also the cpu plays into this).

I'm running Samsung 'True PC2700' DDR (2x256m single sided CL2.5)

If you run a single stick of mem you'll have a better chance of getting it to work than not, but the chance of it working is very slim.

Also there is a mod (don't know where to find it anymore off hand... OC Workplace cleaned their forums and removed alot of useful info) on howto up the voltage of the memory bus.. some found this to be helpful, but most not.

I'm currently running at 2380Mhz (14x170) 1.7V, i can run 175FSB if i leave my case open. Maybe a little higher, but my CPU craps out around 2500 anyway. Somewhere between 170 and 175 is the sweet spot with my case closed, but i haven't bothered to investigate. I run 2x512MB Infineon PC3200 CL3 2.6V, which run at CL2.5 and 170, no problem. No POST at CL2 and 166FSB.

So basically my chances are like 1% and i shouldn't bother Have you heard of anyone who runs it at 166FSB and CL2? I'm thinking such a person might not exist

PS. I refuse to buy any other board though

I've heard of a few that have managed it... but it was always short lived(upto couple/3 months). Seems something didn't like those speeds and found themselves being forced to clock down <166

I have a 512MB stick of Corsair XMS PC2700 CAS 2-2-2-5. Looking on their website now, I notice that the same memory is CAS 2-3-2-5. I was wondering why, so I did a search on their site, and found this:

June 17, 2003: Note that on CMX256A-3200LL and CMX512-3200LL, RAS-to-CAS delay has been changed to 3 clock cycles to improve stability on some new motherboards that do not support a RAS-to-CAS delay of 2 cycles.

I assume it was done to their PC2700 for the same reason.

I'll sell you my stick of PC2700 XMS 2-2-2-5 for $300.00.

Yes but do you run it on a MSI 745U? Getting 2-2-2-5 from Kingston, Crucial, Mushkin, ... is no problem, finding one that works is

The Samsung and Crucial I know will work a peach... both being fairly equal in regards to OCing

Ok i looked around and no Crucial available actually (i meant Corsair). So basically it's between those three:

                            - 1GB (2x512MB TWINX) PC2700/PC333 DDR CORSAIR-LowLatency CL2-2-2
                            - 1024MB (2x 512 MB) PC2700 (PC333) DDR CL2-2-2-5-1T Kingston HyperX
                            - 1024MB (2x 512 MB) PC3000 (PC370) DDR CL2-2-2-6-1T Kingston HyperX

The PC3000 Kingston and the Corsair 2700 are the same price, the PC2700 Kingston is ~15% cheaper. I got no experience with both brands though.

I'll just order one of the three and if it doesn't work with CL2 they go back

I'll have to look when I get home. I'm now running at 166FSB, and I have the RAM set to "Turbo," but I don't remember what timings that puts you at.
Gigabyte P35-DS3L with a Q6600, 2GB Kingston HyperX (after *3* bad pairs of Crucial Ballistix 1066), Galaxy 8800GT 512MB, SB X-Fi, some drives, and a Dell 2005fpw. Running WinXP.
