  • Is my display dying ?

    Hello,

I appear to be having issues with an old 14" (connected as second monitor on my Parhelia).

It runs 1024x768 @75 Hz (as it has been doing for years). Now the image sometimes 'shakes' a little: it appears some lines suddenly shift just a few millimetres to the right, and then back again.
There is some resemblance to when a GSM rings close to it, but there isn't one. Devices around it (other monitor, desklamp, dye-sub printer) haven't changed; nor has the position/orientation of the desk.

Are these signs of a dying monitor ?
(do I finally have a justification for buying a new one ? )

I'd say having a 14" monitor on a Parhelia is justification enough for buying a new display

I little temporary swapping is probably in order. When you say lines 'move' do you mean everything around the line distorts?

Well, I only use it to put toolbars, etc...
My main display is a lot better (although quite old).

No, it is just like a couple of lines (I estimate 5-10 lines) are pushed a bit to the right (they snap back to their correct possition; this happens 3-4 times in rapid succession, then it stops for a while). Some lines above and below also move in the same direction, but they have less movements the further away from the 'problem-lines'. Further away, there is no movement.

The colours appear the same (even during the 'shake'), the image remains visible (the display doesn't blank on these lines).

The shaking seem to happen on the same height (approx. 1/3 from the top of the screen).

Sounds like the monitor to me, but if you can swap monitors over for a while you can rule out RAMDAC problems on the gfx card.

I got that effect with a swollen cap on a geforce2 card, although it happened over the whole screen.

So it might be worth checking the parhelia, too - or at least swapping the monitors around.

                Ok, thanks!

What I think is strange is that it only happens occasionally (yesterday evening, I never saw the monitor behave like this)

I'll swap monitors, and see what that gives.
(I'm hoping it is the display )

ok I'll toss this into the mix also... if it's been moved reciently it could have caused some cold solder concockions to loosen up and or it also could be something near causing interference.

The monitor hadn't been moved, no devices have been added to the socket, the devices around it weren't changed (not their position, not on/off). Everything is exactly the same as it has been for over 8 months...

And my cell phone was metres away...

I've seen things like this many times at a Catholic school with many old but free as in donated monitors. It will probably work fine for a little while but I'd replace it A.S.A.P. in case it eventually shorts. Especially if it is swollen caps as mentioned above.

Well, it seems to have gotten worse: now the entire display suddenly flips 1 cm to the right and back... Just to make sure, I have swapped displays on my Parhelia, and the problem stays with the monitor.

                        It now is disconnected...

I'm thinking of puchasing the Eizo L568:

(using this as primary, and my Philips Brilliance CRT as secondary display)

Prime example of bad caps... this would get worse to the point of completely loosing horizontal sync in short order

(well, 10 years is not bad for a cheap 14" by Target )
