AFAIK, Buuri, you're right about 32bit in the core, and it runs a 16bit emulator for 16bit software. you'll notice a program called wowexec.exe running when you run 16bit programs - (WOW - Windows On Windows, as in 16bit on 32bit).
    What build do you have?

Build 2031. It's quite 'old' I believe but it works. I'm gonna buy the final anyway when it comes out so I don't feel like playing around with different beta builds..

SBLive! is not willing to cooperate, but I still have Win98 so I'll manage.

Yeah, I'm running 2031 as well... it's the proper CD version of the end of May release I think. It does work well though.

Did you check out www.mswin2k.net for help with your SBLive!

Yes I did, but the driver they are offering won't work. I think it's because I updated from NT4 that had LiveWare installed.. (stupid me)

Some weird beta things are happening
here though. Like settings won't save properly - sometimes 'My Computer' ignores the manual settings, etc. But otherwise, great!

I noticed that SETI@home client is running faster than in Win98. And it's not crashing like it did for me. (giving blue screen in 98)

Just going back to BeOS for the moment, just found this:
"BeOS Quake III [Blue-8:23 AM EDT]
A report on Maximum PC from PC Expo talks of a showing of Quake III Arena running on a BeOS system on the show floor on Tuesday using a dual Pentium III box with a Voodoo3. Thanks Salty_Dawg. According to the report, "BeOS officials weren't sure when the port would be released but believed it would be released soon after the other versions are released. Quake III is due out the second half of this year." Additionally, the article reports that plans are in the works for Be ports of SimCity 3000, Quake II, and Civilization. The report describes "visual artifacts" as still present on the BeQ3 demo, and offers a photo of the monitor running the game, but that just shows the main menu."

Anyone know where I can get download 'eval' copy of BeOS. I just wanna see it running, see if it's worth looking further into. I don't want to spend 70 dollars or however much it is if I'm never going to use it.

Firstly, when someone said that the 'G200' has Win2k out of the box did they mean the G400. If so what will I need to get the G200 working in it.

Secondly, I'm about the order the Beta3 from MS. It states that it's something like a 249 day limited version - at the end of that will I be able to upgrade to the win2k final or will I have to do a total re-install. If I can upgrade I'll start using it as a proper OS, if I have to do a full re-install I'll just using it for arsing around in.

No, I did mean G200. The G400 was not supported out of the box for Win2k b3 (up to build 2031 anyway).

AFAIK, you can just upgrade - I upgraded from build 2000 to build 2031 without any problems.

                    Buuri,

Sorry if I caused a bit of confusion. The WinNT kernel (i.e. NT 4.0 and Win2k) will emulate 16 bit apps, but not run them natively. But many programs written exclusively for DOS will not run at all, on either of the NT OS's. With Win2k Micro$oft has opted, for the first time, to sacrifice 'some' compatibility for new fetures and speed (or that is their reasoning). 3rd party apps will be affected the most obviously, but some older Microsoft apps will not run either. That is why Micr$oft is releasing an extra CD with eval, and probably the full release whenever that happens, that test your current hardware AND software for Win2k compliance. So although most programs should work in Win2k, there will be quite a few that will not work. Hope that helped.

                    SteveC,

I have seen promotion copies (i.e. eval versions) on Be's web site before, but don't know if they still offer it. They have a promotion right now to buy the OS for $70, but I doubt you want to fork over the cash. The site is www.be.com .

                      Thanks Steve.

Seeing as it can install on Fat32 is there an easy way to make a dual booting win98/Win2k system. I set up a simple 98/NT system to dual boot by simply going into the bios swapping the drives out to make either the 98 or the NT drive the primary boot device - but surely there must be a better way than this frig.

Feel free to point me at a page if the info's already out there.

All you do is install win98, then install win2k and you automatically get a boot menu. Exactly the same as under NT4 if you kept your drives FAT16.

Yep I did it that way works just fine. Steve whatever you do don't pay for BeOS, it's not worth it. I got it from someone else to try. I have seen a demo of BeOSr4 on a CD that came with a magazine.

And Buuri those SB live drivers work, just go to the device manager and delete anything SB live related, then reboot and windows will ask for drivers. Then install. Other install methods didn't work for me.

Indeed I tried that again engouraged by our feedback Honsow, and behold it worked! I only did the exact same procedure I did the last time, but then it just installed "Creative MultiMedia Interface", but not "SBLive! Basic".

Hmm.. looks like Creative has renamed their products.

                              Anyway it works.
