  • Need W2K network help!

I am building a network at home and everything works fine except that my W98 se computers(3) can not see my W2K (sp1)computer (and the w2k can not see them)! I know the cabels are working, I checked them with my SOHO basic remote cabel tester. The hub is working, I have tried changing ports. I have the latest drivers for my netcards (SOHO) driverdate: 5/23/2000. I have all the Ip addreses dns's... right. I can ping the w2k comp from the w98 se comps! The netcard dos not have any hardware conflicts. I have shared the drives on all computers! I have tried the network ID wizard. All computers use the same workgroup. The w98 se comps are working fine together.Any tips on how to get things to work are welcome! I have set up several networks before so I am not compleatly unfamilier with things!

Is IP the only protocol being used on both PC's?

Yes tcp/ip is the only protocol used on all computers!

In win2k you need to enable the guest account, go into control panel/Users and passwords, click the advanced tab. In advanced user management click advanced, click users in the left window, in the right window right click on the guest and select properties, deselect account is disabled, ok everything and then restart.

        hope that does it..

I don't know about guest account. All I did was make sure the pc's were all in the same workgroup. Let the machines find out there IP address. The network worked just fine.

Funny that the only time I had to install netbueu was when I killed off the netbios. Killing the netbios stopped the file and print sharing. I still didn't have to messa round with the guest account.

I dissabeld the guest account and it is still working!?! The netBEUI is a slow prot. and I would want to get rid of it! but it seems as w2k will only let me install a tcp/ip prot. as a internet protocol!

                  There u go
Windows 98 needs netbios-name resolution. Can't browse the network without..

Netbeui is not so slow in small networks -btw-

                  grtz,

EdSki. Don't you think it's dumb and slow to have one proto. for the internet and one for the network?

No, in fact it's rather smart to disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP and only enable NETBEUI for MS Networking. NETBEUI is a non-routable protocol, so your systems will be more difficult to hack from outside (no port 135-139 fun). Besides, NETBEUI will probably be faster on a small network.
