I have two columns for desktop icons. No more. I had to help my sister out with her boyfriend's computer while he was away, three quarters of the desktop was icons. It took more trying to find or do anything on it. I keep only the most used and a quarter of those are shortcuts to folders. The task bar holds anything else I need.
