I don't think anyone is exaggerating anything, as the power in some fabs was still out as of midday today. It takes quite a while to cycle back up after an outage like that, and they'll be losing boatloads of money for every minute they're not producing.

I'm wishing I hadn't put off my ram purchase. I could've had 128MB of PC-100 for CDN$125 (USD$86). As of last week, it was up to $366. I can't imagine where it will be tomorrow, and here I am stuck with 64MB

Ouch! Taiwan has had another 6 earthquakes since yesterday. That's 16 in two days, all over 4.7 on the richter scale. They've had 2 within 30 mins of each other of 6 and 6.3. Look like the production lines are gonna be out longer than first thought!

Here's some food for thought...

A month ago (ok, maybe two months, I can't really remember) I ordered a dozen 128 meg sticks for around $75 each. Good memory too... brand-name Cas2.

Now, the CHEAPEST I can find it mail-order is $200, and that's only at places that are willing to be honest and give you the prices they posted a couple of days ago. Most places are up to $300 already.

The good news:

Micro Center and CompUSA are still charging their original ripoff prices of $200-ish! With a rebate! Woohoo! All of a sudden, they're a deal! Of course, my Micro Center is currently out of 128's... but they have 256's!

Most of the local 'compish superstores' (about 7 I visited past 3 days) are well out of the "~$129 plus $50 rebate" for PC100-128 and they certainly won't be restocking at the same $. If the rebate check actually shows for the chumps who grabbed those (two places had 'one per customer' signs up, but alas the mem was gone) they will be getting one helluva deal. (~$60-70 for 128!)

:/ Fabs don't have any power as of yet, some est saying at least a week. Plenty of good aftershocks came and to come too, so they can't restart the 'top end' (small die shit) lines until they die off.

First off, this is not meant to down play the tragedy in Taiwan, and it's eventual effects on world memory prices.

But, this just in from the CONSPIRACY THEORY NEWS (AKA my demented mind and/or imagination). SDRAM Memory prices have been rising steadily for a small while now. At the same time there have been production problems with RAMBUS memory. INTEL(the knight who say NIH -Not Invented Here) is not getting the support and orders for the 820 chipset they expected (partly because of it's lack of compelling speed improvements and} largely RAMBUS memory prices. So we have a situation where they're next great part doesn't look good because of RAMBUS' price versus SDRAM. Suddenly SDRAM prices go through the roof, and SDRAM doesn't look quite as bad a value (relatively speaking). And memory manufactures are happy to play along, because they're making a killing selling already (ie cheaply) manufactured memory. Not to mention it takes some of the heat off them for the low yields and high prices of RAMBUS.

Hey, if you can't lower the price of RAMBUS, raise the price of SDRAM. At least until the production can be ramped up, and prices lowered. All this of course thought up before the quake.

Does any of this make any sense?

Hmm... has anyone here seen "A View to a Kill"? It's a minor James Bond flick where the villian wants to drive up prices by causing a huge earthquake and flooding silicon valley. Wonder if Intel's been planting nuclear devices in fault lines off Taiwan.. they could probably get the Red Chinese to fund it.. hmmm.. yeah, I bet that's it!
