  • G200 vs. USB mouse -- help me please!

I have a new USB Intellimouse and a G200. My resolution is 1280x1024 with 32-bit color.

With BusMastering on for the G200, full-window dragging moves in slow motion. But not if I disable bus mastering. Reducing color depth helps dramatically, but who wants to do that? Why does this occur?

My G200 is currently on IRQ15, which it shares with a network adapter. USB is on IRQ12 along with a SBLive.

Is there any way I can have 32-bit color, G200 bus mastering, and full-window dragging at the same time? Would this apply to the G400 as well?

    Thanks,
    Steve

Your G200 is sharing with your network card on IRQ 15. Do you have any free ones? This is definitely not the best setup for your graphics card. As for you mouse, is it a Logitech? Try disabling "smartmove" in their drivers...

you will of course run into your problems if both are sharing... get your G400 on IRQ 9, 10 or 11 and get your SB LIVE on it's own also... These two cards should NOT be sharing their IRQ's!!

Thanks for the help. I have several free IRQ's: 5, 6, 9, but none of the current drivers for my PCI cards, including the G200, will allow me to choose an IRQ.

My G200 still grabs an IRQ with bus-mastering disabled, but I assume it doesn't use it. My IRQ config is:

        00 - System timer
01 - Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural Keyboard
        02 - Programmable interrupt controller
        03 - Communications Port (COM2)
        04 - Communications Port (COM1)
        07 - ECP Printer Port (LPT1)
        08 - System CMOS/real time clock
10 - IRQ Holder for PCI Steering
        10 - Adaptec AVA-2902I/AVA-2902E/AVA-2904/AVA-2910 PCI SCSI Controller
11 - IRQ Holder for PCI Steering
        11 - Adaptec AHA-2940U2W/U2B /AHA-2950U2W PCI Ultra2 SCSI Controller
        12 - Creative SB Live!
12 - Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller
12 - IRQ Holder for PCI Steering
        13 - Numeric data processor
14 - Intel 82371AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller
14 - Primary IDE controller (dual fifo)
        15 - Matrox Millennium G200 AGP - English
15 - NETGEAR FA310TX Fast Ethernet PCI Adapter
15 - IRQ Holder for PCI Steering

I was told some time ago that the G200 needs to be on IRQ 10 or higher. Is that true? What is the ideal IRQ allocation?

        Thanks,
        Steve

G200 should be on irq 9 or higher.
There are others on this forum that can help you more than I,but I think you can get your sound card to use irq 5.You do this via bios.In pnp configuration(bios screen)change pnp os-no, first check to see which pci slot your card is on, change the setting to pci slot1,2,Etc.(whichever slot your sound card is on)use irq 5.That should give your sound card it's own irq ie 5.
Make sure that the pci slot next to your agp slot is free(many times these 2 slots share resources,so to avoid further conflicts cover this base.
Please post your system specs and perhaps others can jump in to help you switch your g200 to irq 9.Good luck!

oh, you have pretty bad conflicts here... try forcing the G200 on IRQ 9 (best are 9 10 or 11) and force your SBLive on IRQ 5m ten all should be fine

I have an Abit BX6 motherboard with Award bios. All my PCI slots are occupied. It doesn't allow me to assign IRQ's to PCI slots.

I'm not sure how it makes IRQ assignment decisions, but the assignment do jump all around if I add or remove a card. I've seen my G200 on IRQ5, IRQ9, IRQ12, and at present IRQ15.

I do have some influence by setting manual resource allocation and disabling different IRQ's. I can choose whether to assign IRQ's to the G200 and/or USB in the BIOS, but Win98 does it's own thing. I've never been able to see any impact of changing PNP OS b/t yes and no.

OK, let me see what I can do... I'll be back in a jiffy!

                Thanks,
                Steve

With your ABit, anything in the PCI slot next to the AGP slot will share IRQ's with each other. You CAN assign IRQ's to specific slots, as well, Just disable PNP OS, and choose assign to the IRQ you want to which slot you want,

                      a, Is it a BX6 r1 or BX6 r2?
b, You may need to update your MB bios to see the feature that Rags is talking about.

OK, I'm back... with the same IRQ setup as before. I was able to move stuff around by disabling various IRQ's in PnP, but I found no way to get my USB/SBLive or G200/NIC pairs to use separate IRQ's. I assume this is due to the slots these cards are in. I have the original BX6 (with latest BIOS), which does not support manually assigning IRQ's to PCI slots.

Anyway, why is everyone so sure that my problem is due to IRQ allocation/sharing? I suspect it has something to do with the G200 itself or it's drivers or Win98's USB implementation since:

                        1) the slow-motion is dramatically affected by enabling/disabling the G200's bus-mastering.

                        2) this slow-motion is dramatically affected by reducing color depth.

Anyway, I guess I'll have to find my screwdriver and pull out and/or rearrange my PCI cards to know for sure whether or not there is an IRQ issue here?
