South Korea!!! No wonder

OK McRhea, listen up.

Do exactly as you are told.

Do NOTHING else until you report back. This is important!

DO NOT delete the Promise Card in device manager. Do ONLY the following and nothing more.

In Windows explorer go to Windows/System/IO Subsys, and DELETE PU66vsd.vxd.

Close Windows explorer and reboot.

While you are waiting for Windows to reboot, go in and give your girlfriend a kiss for me.

Report back on the "hang" situation before you go any further.

I went back and carefully re-read your posts... and I just deleted the pu66vsd.vxd file, and rebooted. There still appears to be some hanging. It's still not the same as when I posted that the problem was solved... The hanging now is almost so small you'd hardly notice it, but in FPS games, Unreal, Quake2, it's really bad... why is it doing this?

We're just about done.

Follow instructions exactly.

Delete nothing, change nothing

Go to Control Panel/System/device manager.

Double click on Promise Ultra 66 controller

click on Drivers tab.

read the Date on the Driver files--Verify that it is 6-25-99.

That's it--I'm done.

Lead on Jorden---you know what we have here.

Thanks Bixler

I'm still going over a couple of things though, like the BIOS setup and re-reading this thread...

I'll be back later

Now, this is fun!!!

I really appreciate this chance to learn so much, both generally, and also about the Promise controller (I have an Ultra 33 which gives me some problems as well).

Jord, you've bought HDDs lately... they're ALL ATA-66, practically, it's almost impossible to get an ATA-33 HD, and if you find one it costs the same or more as the ATA-66 version.

I take it we're now thinking Problem #2 is the sound card?

I agree, disabling the sound card through the Dev. Mgr. is a good trick... but shouldn't we also use the "No Sounds" sound scheme as well? Or what does Windows think when it's trying to play the startup and/or default sounds (even if no other sounds are chosen, those are, and many printers have sound schemes by default, as well as AOL) and there's no sound card???

McRhea: Congratulations on your anniversary. May you two have many more, sans interruptions from stupid hardware. And on behalf of the MURC, I'd like to say "Thanks" for bearing with this incredible, undesireable, yet unfortunately necessary onslaught of information... after all, doesn't one buy a pre-config PC so as not to learn this stuff...? You're doing great...

and birdy:

Jorden knows how to solve this problem: Get a girl who's idea of romance is "sodding about with {the} computer"... and buy her a MAX.

Wait! My comp still hangs! I've deleted the pu66vsd.vxd and pu66vsd.pti files, it hangs.
I've removed the G400 card from the Device manager, reinstalled the CORRECT drivers, it hangs. I've reinstalled the drivers from the diskette with the latest drivers for the Promise, and then gone back and deleted the pu66.vsd.vxd file, it hangs. NOTHING I do will stop it from hanging!

This is really confusing. I mean, why would it do that? On November 17, when I posted that to hanging problem was gone, and it REALLY was... I ran game after game for 3 hours, and it didn't even burp. The thing to know is that the pu66vsd.pti file was installed during the whole time... Everything was fine. And then someone said that maybe I should try to move the modem to a different PCI slot to get it off IRQ 11. So I moved it to slot number 5, farthest away from the G400, and that's when it started to hang again. If you go back and read my posts, I posted that maybe the Ultra 66 had to be lower then the modem, so the modem went to PCI 4 and the Ultra went to PCI 5. Hang. So I moved them back. And it's been hanging ever since. Any idea why? Was it just luck that I got it to not hang for those 3 hours? Bixler, you said you went and removed your Ultra 66 just to see if Windows would reinstall the old drivers, did you get hang back? And can you give me a list of all the files in your C:\Windows\system\iosubsys

please? I want to see how yours is set up. This hanging is really driving me crazy!!!!!

One more thing I was wondering about. After I posted about the hanging being gone, etc. You guys said I should disable the Primary IDE slot on my mobo, which I did. Do you think that's why the system is hanging? Should I re-enable the slot and see what happens?

One last thing, when you go to Display properties, and click on the settings tab, and then click on advanced, how long does it take the "monitor settings" tab to pop up? If it's any indicator as to how messed up my system is, check this out, it takes about 1 minute for that tab to appear, and another 3 if I want to adjust the monitor size, etc. Is that crazy or what? Part of the reason why it takes so long to load up is because of the CONSTANT hanging... every 3 secs. It's like really bad lag in a game or something.

Jordan, before you try to help me out with the IDE and stuff, I'd REALLY, REALLY like to get this hanging problem out of the way! So please wait just a *little* bit more!

And to get back to what birdy said... Hehehe
You know, about not understanding today's youth and stuff...

It's not that I was ignoring my girlfriend and "sodding about the comp." She was already tired because we had gone out all day, and come home about 9:30PM Saturday. We started making love at about 10Pm and continued until about 12... I’m not talking about just kissing and hugging each other while watching TV... I’m talking about having sex.... for 2 hours. So she was out like a rock. She didn't even wake up when I got upset and started cursing. (I don't curse a WHOLE lot... Hehehe ) Oh, and one more thing, she IS beautiful! She was beautiful the first day i saw her, and she still is beautiful now.

HollyBerri, it's NOT fun when it's your comp that's not working correctly!

It's just really weird that the hanging won't go away no matter what I do now...

McRhea: I'll hang back for a while longer, am frantically searching for a complete manual on the Phoenix Bios 4.0/6.0 anyway (someone out there who can email me the manual in pdf format??). The answer to change your cards is in there.

Holly: So you want to sod around in my computer?? (Btw: hdd's with a speed of 5400rpm can still be ATA/33. Only drives at 7200rpm and higher are certainly ATA/66)

Bixler: Here you go again. I'm laying back

Last thing to McRhea: Could you check if the IDE flatcables can connect on both the IDE connectors on the mobo and on the Promise?? Why? Because Pauly has a hunch, I think is worth following (Sorry Pauly that I quote something from ICQ )

So chances are that if he wanted to put the CD ROM on the Promise card the cable from the CD ROM may not fit the Promise card. He would have to go and buy a new cable.

Step by step, my boy.

To answer your question about the reinstall that I did, the answer is yes. --With the original drivers (which are still lurking about somewhere on your comp) my machine immediately suffered a very similar symptom to yours, with even more disastrous results.
And with the correct driver installed and the PU66vsd.vxd deleted, all was well. But my card and config aren't the same as yours. You have a messed up config, and must be patient as we sort through the problems.

Refer to my earlier posts about high performance and be patient.

Renaming a .vxd file is essentially the same as deleting it, so don't be confused. I told you to delete the file for diagnostic purposes.--REMAIN in that mode until the other Helpers weigh in.

I will not be giving further hardware advice, (except on your love life) on this thread unless asked by the MURCers. Others who have been watching will be along soon to sort through the rest of the mess, and you and I both will now learn a few things. Things are happening in the background that you don't know about, so WAIT! One of the reasons this is taking so long is it is impossible for us to tell what config your machine is in and what drivers are running if you keep swapping things around before you are told to. Troubleshooting takes an organized, step-by-step approach.

You have an outlet for your frustration, and it sounds like she doesn't mind, so as they say, lay back and enjoy it.

--------
Oh, to be nineteen (20) again. I'm jealous kid.

Ok Jordan, take as long as you need, I just want this hanging issue fixed first!

About the IDE cables, Yes, the slots on the Promis and the mobo are exactly the same. I'm looking at the 2 right now. If I were to remove the CD from the mobo and plug it into the Promise I'm 100% sure they would fit.

Now lets get the hanging issue fixed, please?
I'll give a little bit more info on when it hangs. I've noticed that the system hangs whenever it has to do anything serious... like starting a game up, starting any little program up (like Winamp, MS word, etc),
running the system information program, basically, anything that makes the HD search for info...

Are ATA/66 drives backward compatible? Is this controller worth all the sturn and drang? Could McRhea connect his drives to the IDE controller on his motherboard and toss the Promise controller and its drivers, at least temporarily?
