I really like my Matrox G400Max! It has excellent output, it's fast in 2D and 3D, and it has a lot of very nice features. But I'm loosing my appreciation for Matrox as a company.
I've been using the G400Max in my primary machine. I have a triple boot configuration between Win2K, Win98SE and Linux. I guess I should just be thankful that I have drivers for all three operating systems. But recently something occured that is an incessant source of irritation.
I got back another machine I had on loan since January. It's video card is a "Doodoo 3". I loaded up a triple boot configuration. And it's OpenGL implementation under Win2K actually works!?! I wonder when Matrox will actually get around to fixing their drivers? Or is there something in their "Private Charter" that specifies the perpetual delay of driver updates for new operating systems? I don't know what to think! But it really does bug me to watch the Doodoo's OpenGL chug right along (I mean we're talking about a P3 450@580 here, so it's bound to be "slow"). When my G400Max, backed up by an Athlon 750, just futzes around with a garbled OpenGL display.
I guess none of you can relate though. You tend to chase off anyone who simply has a complaint. So I thought I might provide one more opportunity for some of you to flame someone. I don't mind! Really!! It will provide a fun distraction while we wait for new drivers.
