Good to see you checked it out for yourself.

I used the gradient tool from Photoshop, but had dithering disabled.

Testing this in CMYK color space is pretty useless since you're watching the result on an RGB monitor and thus the result you're looking at is a converted RGB output.
Usually printers do some dithering as default settings and furthermore inkjet can do nothing else than dithering, ie. they mix their ground colors by printing tiny little dots that give the impression to create a new (mixed) color.

The trick to make it visible (or better: evident) is that the amount of shades has to be smaller that the pixel dimensions of the picture you're applying it to.

The human eye is a pretty high-def scanner sometimes ...

Well I guess that explains nicely why this scanner has a 48bit scanning option and why my paint program works in 64bit colour. Thank for the info.
