  • AOE2 and DirectX 7.0 and G400Max

    Hi.

I am been trying to play MS Age of Empires 2, but I am having some REALLY poor frame rates. The game play was fine, when I first started playing the game, but it seems as the levels become more complex, and there are more "people" on the map, the game becomes intolerably choppy. I have this sneaking suspicion that directx 7.0 is causing havoc.
I realize that the game should slow down a bit when there are like hundreds of objects on the map, but even scrolling across the screen is choppy. Very annoying.

I have played on a similar computer, with an ATI 8MB card, that ran the game WAAAY better than on my 32MB Matrox G400Max... that inherently just seems WRONG!

    Is anybody having similar problems:
    1) Running with Directx 6.X?
    2) Running with Directx 7.0?

Here are the specs for my computer:
    Abit BE6
    Celery 466@525Mhz
    128MB PC100 RAM
    Quantum Fireball KA 9.1
    SBLive!
    Matrox G400 MAX
    MAG Dj700 17" Monitor
    Pioneer 6X DVD
    HP CD Writer 7200i
    Aopen 40X CD
(Ya ya, "Who really needs three CDROMS")

    Realtek PCI Ethernet Card

    Can somebody help me out?

    Thanks!

Do you have a set swap file for windows? If so, try to make it so Windows manages your swap file. This fixed the problem for me.

If this is not the case, then you will have to wait a while for Ensemble to release a patch. Currently, they are looking into problems like slowdown with the game so hang in there.

Yup, Window's already takes care of the Swap file for me.

Looks like I maybe out of luck for the time being until Ensemble releases a patch.

      Thanks for the advice.

I haven't seen any problems, except in large LAN games.

All the single player games I've played (with Dx 7/G400 (no MAX)) have been fine.

I hope Ensemble can help the LAN lag problem. It existed in AOE I and ROR. We started running it off a server with 256mb of RAM and that helped some. All the machines on our LAN are P2/Celeron 400 or better. All but 1 have 128mb of RAM or better. Our LAN is 100mbps.
