  • Very slow performances with Halflife!!

Try 64MB or 256MB aperture size, and be sure that Bus Mastering is really working and that DirectX 7 is well installed.

Also try AGP 1x with the registry hacks.

ALWAYS the latest Powerdesk and DirectX.

Try adding/changing your autoexec.cfg, or hl\valve\hw\opengl.cfg file to include these lines:
    gl_dither "1"
    gl_polyoffset "2"
    gl_lightholes "1"
    gl_keeptjunctions "1"
    r_drawviewmodel "1"
    gl_keeptjunctions "1"
    r_shadows "0"
    cl_himodels "1"
    gl_texturemode "GL_LINEAR_MIPMAP_LINEAR"
    brightness "2.5"
    gamma "3.0"
    gl_playermip "0"
    gl_picmip "0"
    gl_round_down "0"
    gl_texsort "1"
    gl_overbright "1"
    scr_conspeed "8000.00"
    gl_palette_tex "1"
    r_decals "500"

gl_texsort is one that makes a big difference. Also, don't put much faith in that demo. HL timedemos have never worked quite right. And if you are running that particular demo, you are still running an old version of the game (that demo won't run at all on the current version). Patch the game to the latest version.

Should the autoexec.cfg be in the HW directory or the Valve directory? There doesn't seem to be much of anything in my HW directory. Do I need an "opengl.cfg"?

Are you using the turboGL driver ? With that and a Celeron 500 I get 29 fps in OGL using the blowup demo & Half-Life 1.0.1.3 - it works OK with this one, I'm not aware of a higher version patch - Kruzin, if you are, can you give us a link for it ?

        Cheers

        Ian

PS. If you upgraded from a G200, maybe there's a driver conflict ? Try using the uninstaller & re-installing.

PPS. Beezer - in the Valve directory.

          Very slow performances with Halflife!!

          My system : Fic Va 503+, Win98, 96 Mo, G400 16 Mo Sdram on irq 12, K6-2 450 Mhz,AGp aperture 128 mo, Via Agp driver 3.56 in turbo mode, Busmaster 5802144 etc..
          Powerdesk 4.51
          Pcilist says agp*2
          No conflict...
          Always is ok BUT
I only get 15 fps in blowup demo in half life with d3d mode and 16 fps with opengl drivers. What's wrong ?
With my old graphic card ( g200 8 mo with 5.13 drivers) i get 17,5 fps in d3d and 18 fps with opengl drivers !!
          Don't understand...
          help !!
          (And sorry for my english...)

When i upgrade to the g400, i format the disk and i have reinstalled win 98 with dx7, so i think no conflict with old drivers.
I have test force agp*1, etc.. but no realy différence, the performances are still slow in d3d or opengl. But that i don't understand is the fact that the fps with g400 and 5.41 drivers are < than with my old g200 and 5.13 drivers.
maybe 5.41 drivers very slow ?

thank you everybody for yours sugestions and help.

            Thank you everyboby

OK....I was a little of base. Sorry.
The old demo I was thinking of that no longer works was blowout, not blowup 1.0.1.3 is the most current version.

Beezer- I prefer to put video settings in the hl\valve\hw\opengl.cfg file. If it's not there, just make one. If you want to use autoexec.cfg, put one in the valve folder, and one in the folder of any mod...
