  • Half Life: 30fps locked

I've been playing Half Life Counterstrike a lot lately. I've noticed that it stays locked at 30fps no matter what resolution I run at, from 800x600 to 1152x864. What's up?

A friend of mine has a TNT2 Ultra and manages around 70fps. It is definetely smoother on his.

Is this some sort of VSync? I tried both TurboGL 1.3 and 5.52's OGL driver. It will not go above 30fps no matter what.

Probably not a vsynch issue, since vsynch is disabled by default with both the ICD and TGL.

More likely, it's the way your game is set up. In many cases (especially on-line play), you WANT to limit your fps to reduce network lag. Every frame displayed means another net packet must be sent/recieved.

So, there are several commands in the game that can be used in your autoexec:
    fps_modem "30"
Limits fps when on a modem
    fps_lan "30"
For when playing on a LAN, or with a cable/dsl modem
    fps_single "70"
for when in single player mode.
Replace the numbers in quotes with whatever you want to limit to...

        Solution:

        In console type:

        rate 8000

        solved!

It's indeed a setting and not a problem

        Counter-Strike Forever!!!
In case it's a harware problem:
        PIII-500@560, 256 MB, G400 MAX DH on, ABIT BH6, MX300
        Win2K drivers: 5.52

If you play on line, you'd better have a cable modem or better if you crank your rate that high.

And that rate command reffers to network connection speed, and should have no affect on FPS. Perhaps it helps the smoothness of your net games, by improving you connection to the server, but it's not increasing your fps.

With a 56 modem, rate should be around 3000-3500. If I go over 3200, I get lagged terribly. In addition, if others are playing on that server, and have their rate cranked that high, they are sucking up the bandwidth from the server, and lagging other players (especially those of us on modems). For the sake of your fellow gamers, you should limit yourself to 6000 or less. Because of this, many servers run a max rate limit, so no matter what you set it at, the server will not feed you more than 5000 (or whatever their limit is set to).

Yeah sorry I have cablemodem.. ahum...
But when I put the rate back to 2500, my fps max out at 30 FPS.. back to rate 8000 and it max out at 70. Strange? It's true...
