I would say no. we already had "popular" people who tried that (a certain mr. lugner for example), they all failed.

would I vote vor him? no. too ambitious, not enough political experience, imho.

    btw, his german is horrible.

At least he would have a great slogan for the reelection! I'll be back!
According to the latest official figures, 43% of all statistics are totally worthless...

Yes, yes, that happens when you haven't spoken the language natively in 25+ years. The same thing happened to my mom, born in Norway. SHe speaks Norwegian, Norwegians can understand her, but she speaks with such and old coastal accent that people have a hard time understanding her.

The most important questions are, how good an administrator is he? How good is he at building consensus from widely differing opinions? How good is he at selecting trustworthy and qualified people to delegate authority to?

These are some of the qualities that often make successful business leaders successful politicians.

At any rate, California could do (and has done!) a lot worse than Arnold as governor. But his pro-choice, pro-gay rights background could fatally cost him support from CA's most conservative Republican leaders.

How good an administrator do you have to be since California has nowhere to go but UP?

As far as pro-choice/gay-ok goes; the (R) leadership will have little say in this since all he needs to do is get his name on the ballot with petitions, which should be no problem. The other matter who do THEY have as a viable candidate? The pickings are slim....

                Try to outlaw marijuana?

It's been outlawed for decades....and Supreme Court rulings give Federal law dominion over State law in such matters. These rulings go way back to before marijuana was even an issue.

yup, sure. that's why I asked if his english got better - if he can't speak german (with austrian accent ) anymore, he should at least be able to speak better english...

His English seems fine.. not that one could tell just from watching movies, since the lines are written for him. I was surprised to see the Chinese actress who was in The Transporter being interviewed in Chinese because she had basically done her lines phonetically. Had me fooled!

Anyway, I don't think he'll pull it off, CA is way too liberal.

When Reagan got elected, he the electorate was very angry at the Democratic party. It took nearly a generation for the Democrats to recover.

The Democrats have enjoyed 8 years in power; the state is in far worse shape than it was in 8 years ago. I left the state 12 years ago, and even with the Republicans running it, it was sliding downhill in a hurry.

All of the major powerhouses of California's business industry have left the state for lower-overhead locations with more reasonable business laws and lower taxes: Aerospace contractors have moved to Arizona or Kansas. Tech is still there, make no mistake. However, they are starting to see a slow but definite exodus North or East: There is no reason to be tied to a certain geographic space anymore with the Internet and Manufacturing technology as developed as it is.

California Voters are angry... They remember Enron, which the Democrats justifiably blamed on the Republicans; unfortunately, the Democrats took no action at the state level to fix it other than to bitch and whine on something that should have been a top priority to fix when they took power. They remember the "temporary" water usage tax which was made permanent in the wake of huge budget shortfalls.

They are looking for direction...Arnie is the "Ultimate Good Guy". A well-known person with charm, magnetism and a well-connected family. He may be a Republican, but the Kennedys will still help him - overtly or covertly. They may already have: you can't help but wonder the kinds of talk Arnold may have overheard at family get togethers: casual advice, inside information and a little prying can really help you be in the right place at the right time.

He's not stupid...and he has many friends in business and politics (Representative Issa, for one: the lead contributor for the campaign to recall Davis). Issa isn't afraid to spend his own money on risky ventures, either. I remember how much he spent when he setup DEI before most people even knew what a car alarm was.

I'm betting 70/30 that Arnold will step up to the plate for Governer. Jesse Ventura may end up as a write-in Lieutenant Governer by the time the pundits are done laughing.

I think it hinges on this: If T3 gets good profits and lots of media attention, he will go for it.

Jeez this is starting to sound like something out of Ray Bradberry books, was it Fahrenheit 451 or one of his short stories where the wife of the protagonist is basing her voting on how good the candidate looks LOL

How do you think Slick Willy Clinton made it into office at all, let alone 2 terms.
