There is NO point to using an SUV or a pickup truck as a commuter vehicle. None. The "lie" that they're "safe" (in reality less safe than a good well-built European vehicle) has caught on.

'Course I remember a commercial from the mid-90's that called the Chevrolet Cavalier "a very safe car". *ahem*

What really cracks me up is the US Government's bought-and-paid-for crash safety ratings lab. They routinely give deathtraps like the Neon a high rating - as high as Volvo's wagons! Err... I somehow just don't think so.

The only safety advantage to an SUV is that it is more massive. It is either less safe for the driver of the other vehicle, or in no way safer once other switch to SUV's...

Again, greater chance of rollover due to high center of gravity, worse maneuverability/braking due to larger mass, worse fuel economy....need I go on???

Down with the SUV, bring on the Mini's!!

I agree with most of what you say except for , and that's if you mean it this way, mini-cars. Like compact models. I prefer a mid-sized sports sedan, like the Corolla or the Celica.

Which makes me think of the Vitz RS1.5 (or a toyota Echo RS1.5) and what Alice owns, a Yaris. Why don't they keep the original names?

Yes to all of you - an SUV is NOT a commuter vehicle. Many ppl use it as such, however, mine suits the purpose I use it for. I do commute, but I use a much more fuel conscious vehicle - A little Ford Ranger - as I need a truck for business purposes ( I pickup/dropoff steel to customers).

Please don't assume that everyone who drives an SUV is an a**hole, otherwise you fall into the same category.

          Nuff said.
Yeah, well I'm gonna build my own lunar space lander! With blackjack aaaaannd Hookers! Actually, forget the space lander, and the blackjack. Ahhhh forget the whole thing!

I just don't like the vehicle, sorry if I offended you. My disliking the SUV is not as intense as Jammrock's. I just don't like most (95%) of the models out there, they aren't a nice looking vehicle for the most part.

Interesting that an SUV flipped right in front of my house as I was preparing to go out for a bikeride today.

Needless to say, I helped the driver out of the vehicle and was relieved that noone was hurt.

Took a corner too fast and the Nissan Pathfinder just flipped.

                  I heard a screech and a thud....

Reaffirms my views like nothing else...

Not sure I understand K6...(must buy new dictionary with common words today...or perhaps watch more English news)
You mean something like slide or perhaps more like not passing the moose test?

hmm, I saw a civic flipped on it's side a couple days ago.
                      - guess those are dangerous too.

                        Ahhh...now I know what you mean K6

If something is doing something like this than how on Earth it was granted permission to move in traffic?
The only cases when I hear something like this happened here is when overloaded truck or very high bus (extremely rarely) starts to slide and grappe to something with wheels at the side of the road.
And I doubt that civic would do this just because of taking the corner too fast. I've seen a small car (Deawoo Tico I think, and pretty high for its size) beeing hit mostly from flank, it basically flew a couple of meters but was on four wheels after that...

Note that the car flipped without any collision. This car flipped simply because the driver took a corner too fast without taking into account the high center of gravity.

If all drivers were forced to take physics, not only would there be fewer SUV's on the roads, there would also be more safe drivers...

Yes the civic took a corner too fast - ended up oversteering and rolling down a slight incline - ending up on it's side on someones front lawn (I really don't know how it just managed to stop on it's side)
If you don't know your limitations you shouldn't be driving - period.

Ahhh...but it oversteered before flipping. The driver at least had a chance to recapture control (welll...I would just feel way before oversteering that back wheels are starting to loose grip)...but in what K6 saw, he hadn't (if I understand correctly what happened...simple failing of the moose test, the car that does this here during testin isn't allowed into trafiic (remember Mercedes A?))

The car in question is a Nissan Pathfinder and the driver was a female around 40 years of age. She was going too fast and tried to pass a Toyota Celica convertible.

                                Subsequently, she flipped the car...
