If you're going to do it at all, the 8th day after birth is the absolute best time to do it (not coincidentally, this is when the Jewish tradition - I'm unclear on the Muslim tradition - requires that it be done). On that day, the child's ability to heal is the greatest, meaning that there will be no scarring whatsoever for a properly-performed circumcision.

The 8th day is ALSO the day that surgeons often choose to do major infant surgery such as hernia repair, for the same reason. My cousin needed a hernia repaired when she was born, and they did it on the 8th day. They closed the incision (this was pre-laporoscopy) with bio-soluble superglue and surgical tape... and there is no scar. None whatsoever. I wish that we had known about Logan's undescended testicle this early, although his scar is quite minimal (the surgery was done when he was a couple months old).

The original Jewish/Muslim circumcision tradition had a great deal to do with wandering the desert with no possibility of bathing ... ever. It made circumcision quite a good idea to prevent numerous diseases. Now both traditions view it as a commandment from God. Other religions do far FAR worse things. *shrug*

OK, you've said that it's done in the best possible time, minimazing risk (don't know (and don't care actually...) if I agree with this; though it's nice to see that you're not on the track of preaching it). You've also said why the tradition was started in the first place. But still...why isn't it silly? (so what that others make more...silly things; I'm quite upset that I was raised in catholic tradition against my will...so I would probably not look too kindly at modifying my body)

Circumcision is also a Christian tradition, but it's long since become more of an option rather than a commandment from God... at least in the U.S.

Some people ARE very upset about it, most especially those who are extremely ecumenical and disconnected with their faith/tradition. There is a growing number of circumcised men who are having it "undone" later in life.

Is it "silly"? Maybe, maybe not. If you believe that it's a commandment from God, then no it's not silly. If you don't, then it might be silly depending on how traditional you are, or how connected with tradition.

Truthfully, most men don't much care - and depending on where you live you'll find women who prefer it one way or the other. (My wife, for example, finds uncircumcised... well... "icky" apparently).

It's one of those things that uncircumcised men find more distasteful contemplating than circumcised men. (Familiarity factor, presumably.)

So is it silly? Maybe. Maybe not. *shrug*

But anyone that says "oh, you lose sensitivity"... yeah, WHATever... LOL.

Well, the problem I see with "commandment from God" is that...it doesn't apply to you, but to someone else ([sarcasm]killing infidels isn't silly, right? After all Allah demands it[/sarcasm]). And I think my opinion is that any religious rule that doesn't apply to you AT ALL, only to soemone else is...at least silly.

And familiatity...I don't know; how many circumcised know how it is the other way? (btw, some seriously "undone" it? I'd say that...it's cosmetical, but not really undoing it...).

"Loosing sensitivity"...hmm, well, you can always say to yourself it helps to please the women (come to think of it...I could imagine some practical things connected with this...but, like you say: whatever; I'm just concentrating on sillines basically...)

Yep, they have. Recent advances allow for ... almost complete restoration. Clearly there is some change that has happened over the lifetime of not having a covering, but apparently after some months with a restored foreskin, men report increased sensitivity and that the glans regains a more uncircumcised appearance - smoother, etc.

There is a certain population that is resistant to HIV infection. Needless to say a lot of research is going on as to why.

I assume they don't have sense in the restored part, right?

No kidding. This is one of the hottest topics in medical research right now.

On the other hand, it's nowhere NEAR 37% of Europeans. I don't know where James got that absurd number. Last I heard it was a HANDFUL of people in the ENTIRE WORLD.

As usual I get my numbers from Lancet. So they are accurate, and the thing is that they get infected but don't develop the disease and don't become carriers either.

One speculation is that it was the black plague that gave a selection and is the cause of this high number.

Jeeze Jason, who peed in your Post Tosties?

As far as having it "undone" goes.
Why? I mean volunteering to let someone take knife to your weenie?
It makes sense if you have religious or health reasons I suppose.
But just to make the statement that you think your folks made a bad decision a long time ago? Seems a bit much to me.
