The 8th day is ALSO the day that surgeons often choose to do major infant surgery such as hernia repair, for the same reason. My cousin needed a hernia repaired when she was born, and they did it on the 8th day. They closed the incision (this was pre-laporoscopy) with bio-soluble superglue and surgical tape... and there is no scar. None whatsoever. I wish that we had known about Logan's undescended testicle this early, although his scar is quite minimal (the surgery was done when he was a couple months old).
The original Jewish/Muslim circumcision tradition had a great deal to do with wandering the desert with no possibility of bathing ... ever. It made circumcision quite a good idea to prevent numerous diseases. Now both traditions view it as a commandment from God. Other religions do far FAR worse things. *shrug*

(btw, some seriously "undone" it? I'd say that...it's cosmetical, but not really undoing it...).
(come to think of it...I could imagine some practical things connected with this...but, like you say: whatever; I'm just concentrating on sillines basically...)
So they are accurate, and the thing is that they get infected but don't develop the disease and don't become carriers either.
