Cyclic universe

The idea of a cyclic universe, first proposed in 2002 by Steinhardt and Turok, is an alternative to anthropic selection.
The first documentation of a cyclical expanding and contracting universe comes from the poetic writings of Erasmus Darwin in 1791.
The oscillatory universe is the hypothesis, attributable to Richard Tolman from 1934, that the universe undergoes an infinite series of oscillations, each beginning with a big bang and ending with a big crunch. After the big bang, the universe expands for a while before the gravitational attraction of matter causes it to collapse back in and undergo a bounce. (Wikipedia). The cyclic universe is a rehash of this, with some new hypotheses.Brian (the devil incarnate)
