  • Internet trouble...

    Hi Guys and Gals,

i'm having trouble accessing certain websites, like the BBC and shoutcast seems to not be playing any tunes, even though i can access and choose from their website.

    Anyone else having trouble ?

    I've checked router and modem..
    ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 608 kbps 160 kbps
Line Attenuation 57 db 15.5 db
Noise Margin 17 db 31 db

hmmm gotta lot of attenuation, and noise margin...could that be why some DNS servers or something aren't accessible ?

    Thanks for any help

    Jez

Could be the MTU size or a firewall rule thats doing it.

Its about once a month or so...
I've been on ADSL for about 4 or 5 years, when i could get 512 as the best offer, and 1Mb was just coming in.
Neither the MTU or Firewall rules have been changed at any time.
I use a netgear DG834G V1 as my Router Modem, and i have a Via Epia 600MHz fanless, with two USB2 keys as boot and config for Devil-Linux.
I have one PC on the Netgear DMZ (switched on rarely) and one PC connected to the Netgear directly.
All my other PC's come thru the Devil-Linux Firewall/Router. (edit : Devil-linux machine is alos connected to netgear modem)

It only started a couple of months ago, and even the PC directly on the Netgear was not able to login to Hotmail, or such, and AV updates took HOURS!!!
Its a lot better today, but when i had the problem, i did some TRACERT tests to Yahoo and google, and found that straight after the Netgear, there were 3 or 4 time-outs before i got a ping response.
Virgin-Radio website was really fast, with only the first step after my Modem timing out, and the rest being less the 100ms...

I think France Telecom are pissing with the line and not telling anyone, either that, or it may be over-used since more and more people in the area are getting ADSL connections...

And i'm at the very end of the line for ADSL anyways...

When i quizzed France Telecom about the line attenuation, and the fact that the attenuation of my neighbour (10m away) is 44dB, they said i must have an extra 500m of cable somewhere...
...really. I checked the manholes just in case someone left 500m of phone wire under there, and could not see anything.

The France telecom engineer basically said the best option was to get a second phone line put in...
