Depending on content, the vehicle will effectively cost between $32,000 -$38,000 after a tax credit of $7,500.

There is a US tax credit that maxes out at $7,500 depending on the size of the battery, and Volt qualifies for the maximum credit. Some states also offer tax credits for EV's.

Net cost is well <$40k, plus the Prius can only do 12.5 miles electric and at lower speeds.

At the US average of 36 miles/day you could drive a Volt gasoline free for less than $20 a month, saving (according to the auto press) over $1,000 a year at $2.50 a gallon over a 30 mpg gas vehicle, and a lot more if/when oil prices skyrocket again or Obama gets his Cap & Trade.

It's still going to be at least 10 grand more than a Prius.
I'm on your side in this, I hope it does well.
