More Details on The CW's Proposed Flash Series

The CW surprised many this morning when the announcement came that they're looking to start another DC Comic TV series, starring The Flash. Since then we've learned that the character will be introduced in the upcoming season of Arrow and the network is still mulling over the spin-off potential of the character.

We also know that Arrow writers Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg and DC Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns are writing a script for the pilot and that David Nutter, director of the Arrow pilot, could direct The Flash pilot.

A few more updates have come along since then (via Deadline) including word that the character is set to appear in the 8th or 9th episode in the upcoming season of Arrow, and casting is expected to begin this week.

"Barry Allen’s story always has been a favorite of mine," Berlanti said, "as well as of Andrew Kreisberg and Geoff Johns. We wanted everyone to know about the show as that process commenced. We think it fits well both in terms of Arrow and as a stand-alone series."

A few weeks ago we heard rumblings that ‘Arrow”s forthcoming ‘The Flash‘ spinoff pilot had begun casting for a few reinterpretations of classic DC characters, but the latest reports suggest things might be getting seriously sci-fi. Find out who Grant Gustin‘s Barry Allen could go up against, and what out-there DC hero could show up as a potential sidekick!

Take these latest casting rumors with a grain of salt, but the latest from Blüdhaven Banter (the same source of casting calls for the West family) suggests that Grant Gustin’s Barry Allen character will very likely develop an antagonistic relationship with “Detective Eddie Thawne,” very a likely an interpretation of Flash arch-nemesis Professor Zoom!

Renamed from his comic origins as time-traveler Eobard Thawne, ‘The Flash”s incarnation will instead be a series regular detective transferred to Central City Police Department from Keystone, and who “harbors a dark secret,” often taking credit for Barry’s work.

Elsewhere, MovieHole claims that DC character Cisco Ramon will also have a regular presence in the series, better known as the somewhat-controversial Latino hero Vibe. The character wouldn’t yet have his vibration-based powers, instead operating among his comic roots as a talented mechanical engineer who assists Barry.

I just started watching Arrow (almost done with Season 1) and so far seems to be relatively grounded in "reality". Sounds like that either isn't the case in future episodes or in this new season. I'd be interested to see where they go with a Flash-based series, even though I've always thought the character was better taken in small doses.

But that is Flash Gordon, and this is The Flash, like the series they already did in the 90's / 00's.
