Quick and easy File server?

Is there a Linux distro (like the router floppy distros) that can be an NAS?

A friend wants to build a remote controlled "Storage Computer" that don't have to have a monitor, keybord, mouse etc..... (He has already filled his computers with HDD's....)

Anyone heard of such thing?

Or a way to configure a distro to do it?

If there's artificial intelligence, there's bound to be some artificial stupidity.
