Newbie trying to install linux software

This is the output from Xandros (2.0) Networks. This is the tool for installing .debs and .rpms. This is when I was installing the Gimp 2.0. I can tell it can not find some of the libraries but where do I get them from? This happens with all Binaries .debs and .rpms

This is if I try to install a program from source:

tar xzvf /home/totally-tech/Desktop/QUANTA-0.4.tar.gz

This works then I cd into that directory I just created and:

./configure

I then get :

This is just saying I don't have a compiler but the gcc I downloaded was meant to be the complete one and do all the usual languages. This machine also will be used for my programing and I can't compile why program?I have got a copy of gcc from gcc.gnu.com but don't know how to install it if I can't install anything else! I haven't got this machine on the internet yet having only just built it so any advice would help.

This is a out of the box install of Xandros if anyone wants to know.
