Making long videos questions

I would like to know where there might be a guide and/or info on making a and taking a 40 minute video from a VCR and then taking the AVI, converting it to MPEG with Ligos and since each 10 minutes of VCR video is about 800 MB in AVI form. Then using Ligos it makes about a 250 MB MPEG file. So taking a 40 minute VCR movie will be making a huge AVI file. I will need to do it in sections or pieces. There are some movies I really do not want in sections. But, is there a good guide on doing this stuff. I use a Marvel G400. Thanx in advance for help and suggestions.
