Copy/Moving Large numbers of files in 98

Has anyone else come across the problem that if they try to copy/move a large number of files in Windows 98SE that explorer will go "not responding". I do this to restore my original install of Star Trek Armada after a MOD.

If I copy the files in smaller chunks, they are fine. Anyone know if there is a workaround/setting to compenstae for this in the OS.
