S.M.A.R.T info on drives in a RAID?

tried HDD Health without luck when I first went down this path.

I agree wth HD's are still the cheapest/best backup method.. But as you all know... once you have storage space even if it shouldn't be used... you use it.

I use a P5WD2 and Intels Matrix storage allowed me to see the same mount of basic SMART data as on the PATA controller...
Basic as in OK on POST, like all the other drives.

HDD Health is a free program that shows the SMART info...

I don't know about other fakeRAID controllers, but Intel's Matrix RAID (ICHxR) doesn't allow disk's S.M.A.R.T. status reading if they are employed in any RAID volumes.

Linux's software RAID, on the other hand, doesn't have such limitation because it access drives as separate block devices.

Hard drives are still the best storage medium, for the price.

I'd be happy getting another couple of 500Gb drives, just to be sure I had enough space for everything, and to have 500Gb free 'Just in case' i had to move the data from one of the 200+Gb storage drives...

VJ - it says they are 'ok' but gives NO details. Like how many bad sectors there have been or health in any detail.

I'm moving a bunch of data around and plan on breaking the raid later tonight. Moving almost 500gb of data around is.... painful. This is one of the main reasons I wish there was a cheap viable home backup method for these ever growing drives (other than other hard drives).

Doesn't the raidcontroller have software in which the smart status of each drive can be seen?

yeah the drive fitness provided by the manufacturers is usually a very good test.
I have had drives that have no SMART errors but the manufacturers utility has picked up problems.

Samsung have a utility to check their own make harddrives.

You should try running that, but i suspect your main problem is the Silicon Image SATA Raid chips...

Its a non-native controller, and many DOS programs will not see them.

An intel board with integrated Sata will work, but it has to be native, ie in the chipset itself.
I think even my old intel 865 board has integrated Sata, so at least from i865 upwards should work.

Its not sure the SMART will have found anything...

On my WD Raptor 150Gb, SMART was always fine, but I also had to run chkdsk before every defrag, and a few times at boot.
The WD disk check finally gave me the news : DEAD.

Curious only - stripe for mp3s? ................. what do you use to rip and what sort of speed do you get from that to warrant a stripe for mp3s? ...................... and you listen to these things in 500X speed only I presume?

Seriously.... as a rule I tend to buy Seagates these days. Samsung is the OEM I need it and oh they are on special choice...

Western Digital used to be a favorite but not so much lately after having a batch die on me and I've had more Maxtor's die under my care than all the rest put together.
