Here's a weird one. I have a G400Max (5.25) and a Gigabyte GA-5AXr4 mobo, which comes with an AGP driver supplied by ALi. I installed this driver as a matter of course when I set up the machine. However, I subsequently ran PCIList and found that my AGP was only running at 1x. I uninstalled the driver and went with the MS one on 98se and hey presto! - 2x AGP. That was about 2 weeks ago.
However, this morning when I got up early to do the next level on Dungeon Keeper 2 before I went to work (yes, I am that sad), the screen filled with garbage and the system locked. What was strange was that I'd been playing DK2 for about 3 hours last night with no problems. I decided to try some other games, one's that I know work: QuakeII, Quake3Test, Half-Life, Mechwarrior3, even the tech demo produced the same results.
I don't know why I thought of it but the first thing I did was reinstall the ALi AGP driver. Everything worked again to my surprise but PCIList again showed 1x AGP. I then removed the driver (going back the MS one), tried all the games and the tech demo and found that everything worked again.
What's going on here? I can understand that things might stop working after changing system settings, installing new drivers etc. but all I did was shut down the machine, go to bed, and turn it on again 8 hours later. Maybe a system file got corrupted or something and just needed reinstalling? I dunno, it's weird.
