How does the flat-panel add-on work?

As in, is there a standard for flat-panel displays? Do you have to set the resolution and the scan rates, etc.?

Basicallt.. I am wondering if it is possible to hook up a bare LCD screen to the controller for a flat-panel screen. LCD controllers start at $199 and I am trying to find a cheaper alternative.
