I have a G400 MAX, and when I try to restart Windows 98 in DOS mode, the screen just goes blank and I get a message saying "Picture out of range" from the monitor (effectively an Out of Sync message). The problem also occasionally occurs upon normal startup, but very rarely, something like once every 20 to 30 startups. The problem appeared just a week or so ago (the machine has been in use for several months now), and I haven't added any components or changed the configuration of the OS lately. I have installed new pieces of software, but nothing that should cause this kind of behaviour (although it might well be possible). I tried installing the latest drivers as instructed in the FAQ, but it didn't help.
There is also another problem that might or might not be connected with the previous one. Once in a while (I haven't really managed to time it or see a regularity), the screen goes black for a few seconds. In Windows desktop the picture usually reappears after these few seconds with no problems, but sometimes the screen remains black and even the three finger salute gets no response from the machine and the reset button is the only way to go. In some applications, especially games (Baldur's Gate is the last one to do this), the screen almost inevitably remains black or displays a blue screen of death. This problem is getting more and more annoying every day.
My system is as follows:
Athlon 500 mhz
Asus K7M motherboard
Matrox G400 MAX
Viewpoint 17" monitor
Soundblaster Live! 1024
Windows 98
Two rather generic NICs (one to a LAN and another to the Internet)
Has anyone experienced similar behaviour or have an idea what could be causing this?
