      On a related topic... the House killed HR 163, the bill that could have reinstated the draft, by a vote of 402 to 2. I doubt it will stop the "you're going to get drafted: VOTE!" commercials, but it is a good thing to see anyways...

        A draft would definitely have its place, as in a genuine national emergency, in which the government would feel compelled to build up its military ranks more quickly than could be accommodated by an all-volunteer force (think "December 8, 1941" here), despite the upsurge in volunteers that you'd almost certainly see. Under those circumstances the political will and public backing would likely be strongly in favor. You don't see that today, despite the clamoring over the "war on terror." The almost universal perception is that we're not currently ready to take that step. When we are ready, everyone will know and (nearly) everyone will be in favor.
