  • Detroit Tigers roaring!

55-25 one game short of the season halfway point

    PITTSBURGH --

In a race against time, the Tigers have neither won nor lost. They've tied -- but that, in itself, is quite an accomplishment.

Their 7-6 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night at magnificent PNC Park -- the 17th victory in their last 19 games -- gave the Tigers a 55-25 record, one game shy of the season's halfway mark.

Know who else was 55-25 after 80 games? Here's a hint: They won it all.

    Here's another: Bless you, boys.

Need another? Didn't think so. The 2006 Tigers have caught the 1984 Tigers, their illustrious ancestor. They didn't have the same record after 40 games, not even close, but they do after 80.

That's because after their 35-5 start, the Tigers leveled off with a 20-20 record in 1984. This team, meanwhile, has gone from a 27-13 record in its first 40 to a 28-12 record in its second 40.

"We've done it differently," said Curtis Granderson, "but hopefully with the same results at the end."

It's not the best-ever 80-game mark for the Tigers, but almost. The 1911 team, with Ty Cobb hitting .420, was 56-24.
