  • Are you an optimist and pessimist?

So which one are you? I'd say most will be on the pessimist side but who knows... .

Both optimists and pessimists contribute to society.

The optimist invents the airplane, and the pessimist invents the parachute.

Depends on who I'm interacting with. With Margie and Erik I'm an optimist because they almost always exceeds their own expectations. With diplomats it pays to always be pessimistic because they almost always have higher expectations than their results would indicate wise at the time.

Both now though I use to say that I was a pessimist that wanted to be an optimist.

when I commented to my former emloyer 'I don't think that will work'
he would respond 'Don't be so negative'
I would always reply 'OK, I'm SURE it won't work'

I'm a 'realist', hope for the best, expect the worst.

That's the problem I have with my boss. People people just cannot think in terms of concrete doability.

"Um.. that's a square peg. It won't fit into that round hole."

              "YOU'RE SO NEGATIVE!"

"No, I have a brain and I'm using it."

Now, the funny thing is.. he often doesn't want to try to sell expensive things to people who might buy them, thinking that everyone thinks like he does and that you will just piss them off by trying. Now THAT'S negative thinking!

I think most people would be a mix. I used to be an optimist thinking that all people were basically good and honest, then too many proved me wrong.

Now, I am an optimist with regards to my family, other than that...

People are built to survive with their brains, so if survival means being good and honest, that's what they'll be. If survival means stabbing each other in the back, that will happen. For the former to occur, though, you need a homogeneous society where interaction is smooth and trust is almost automatic.
