Should drug addicts in prison be forced to go cold turkey?

BBC, News, BBC News, news online, world, uk, international, foreign, british, online, service

My first reaction is yes, not even methadone. It is quite likely they are there because of their addiction. They should therefore be aware that they will have a very unpleasant time for the first couple of weeks or so and that will be an integral part of their sentence.

My second reaction is yes, but only under very strict 24 hour supervision.

My third reaction is that this should be the sort of all drug-addicts.

My fourth reaction is that all drug dealers or aiders and abettors should be given life, as they are the purveyors of misery and, often, death in atrocious circumstances.

However, there is a risk; prison staff or other prisoners may slip them a fix. Personally, I feel that if prison staff deal in drugs, even so-called 'soft' or 'recreational' ones, they must undergo a 20 year minimum sentence behind the bars without parole for abusing their trust and position. As for prisoners with drugs, an extra 5 years without parole for each offence sounds about right to me. Every effort should be made to ensure that all penal establishments should be totally drug-free.

My personal view is that prison for drug offences should be just that: total deprivation of all personal liberties, not even TV or radio. Those behind bars are there because they have displayed extreme antisocial behaviour; if they continue to do so, or attempt to do so, while in prison, then their sentences should be prolonged. I don't think any prison régime can be too harsh for these guys.

Hear Hear! I know a number of prison staff (all completely above reproach) and the way they describe the prisoners 'lot' is truly amazing. For people who are supposed to be in there for punishment, they seem to have a lot of rights, and they of course know them off-by-heart. There should be a lot more deprivation during the sentence, and a lot more focus on rehab.

Looking at this from the other side, I beleive there is a strong argument for global legalisation of drugs, as long as it comes with sensible education and usage controls. Prices would plumett, slashing crime rates overnight. Current global policy is clearly not working.

Yeah, lets do the same with bad alcoholics too, they can handle going without booze for while!

What do you think they do in detox?

They might give them some Naltrexone (an opioid receptor antagonist ) to ease some of the symptoms, but cold turkey it is.
