Men storm police station to free friend, then check in to same hospital as injured cops
By Bejay Browne
THREE MEN stormed Peyia police station to free a friend of theirs, only to be arrested when they checked in for first aid at Paphos General Hospital, where the policemen they had beaten up were being treated.
The trouble began when a British woman residing in Paphos complained to Peyia police that her 27-year-old Cypriot boyfriend had threatened her with violence on Saturday night.
Officers went to the pub in Coral Bay where the suspect was drinking, and quietly asked him to step outside to answer some questions.
The man began to abuse officers, both verbally and physically. He was arrested and taken to Peyia police station. On his arrival, police claim he lost control and began to smash his head against the station wall.
Officers were waiting for an ambulance to take him to Paphos General Hospital for treatment, when three of the suspect’s friends stormed the police station, throwing punches and assaulting officers. They freed their friend, and went onto Paphos General Hospital for medical assistance.
But that was exactly where the police officers had gone for treatment to the injuries they had suffered in the attack, and the four men were promptly arrested.
Another of the suspects’ friends then showed up at the hospital, where he had a violent outburst, causing damage and frightening staff and patients. He was heard shouting, â€I’ll cut off the policeman’s head and play football with it.†He was also arrested.
The suspects are aged between 27 and 45. They were remanded in custody for five days on Sunday morning.
