I ask because Detroit, union capitol of the US, has just PRIVATIZED trash collection and the new company is out in FORCE.
An army of trucks,
The trucks are NEW, HUGE AND CLEAN,
CNG powered,
Curbside recycling,
Bulk pickups 3x as often,
etc.
Folks in the neighborhoods are happy as clams, and the plan is an illegal dumping cleanup on a huge scale.
Union who?
The State has taken over Belle Isle, which is larger than NYC's Central Park. They started State Police patrols and the refurbishment of the Casino, Aquarium, huge fountains etc. Gorgeous old facilities that deserve TLC.
This weekend they had Indy car and several other races there, broadcast on ABC, and by all accouts it was a massive success.
There's a proposal to use >$400 million in monies freed up by the bankruptcy to tear down abandoned buildings of all types. Civic groups are already chipping in.
Almost $3 billion in new developments have been announced, some already started, and homes are selling in many neighborhoods.
Police Chief Craig's crew is still hitting trouble zones with impunity, and the state and feds are joining the party. 300-400 man flood-the-zone raids on gangs etc. Kick-ing-ass.
Maybe there's hope for the old girl after all.
