  • Inhumans (201x: Marvel)

Oh boy, this could be good

Marvel will sleep when it's dead.

While the rest of the country is still enraptured with the Guardians of the Galaxy movie, it's being reported that the company is readying a script for a group of superheroes known as the Inhumans.

"The studio is happy with the existing script by Joe Robert Cole, and now, the next logical step is to take it out to filmmakers," Collider reported, adding: "According to our sources, Marvel plans to handle The Inhumans in the same way they handled Guardians of the Galaxy."

You may recall Nicole Perlman, a co-writer on Guardians of the Galaxy, was also part of Marvel's writing program. When Marvel was pleased with Perlman's Guardians script, they began sending it out to filmmakers. According to Collider, Marvel is presumably at this stage with Cole and his Inhumans script.

These aren't the first rumors about an Inhumans movie in the works. Marvel legend Stan Lee mentioned that the studio was considering an Inhumans movie back in 2013 (though it's unclear how close Lee is to Marvel's filmmaking division). And Collider's unconfirmed news also comes on the heels of a possible hint from Vin Diesel, who provided the baritone voice for Guardians' Groot. Diesel curiously mentioned the Inhumans in a Facebook post over the weekend:

"I get the strange feeling that Marvel thinks I'm Inhuman... Haha."

All this buzz makes it a good time to get acquainted with Marvel's Inhumans:

What is an Inhuman? Who are the Inhumans?

The Inhumans are a race of beings with superpowers that were created when an alien race called the Kree (Ronan the Accuser, the main villain in Guardians, is a Kree) experimented on Earth's early humans. They first appeared in Marvel's Fantastic Four #45 (1965) and were created by legendary comic artist Jack Kirby and Lee.

Inhumans get their powers when they're exposed to a substance called Terrigen Mist. After being exposed to this substance, they gain new abilities, but sometimes the risky process leaves them with deformities. In a sense, they're probably more like the X-Men than they are The Avengers because of this process: Inhumans, like X-Men's mutants, have a common background story about their powers.

The most prominent Inhumans in the Marvel universe are a royal family:

Black Bolt is the king. He emits large amounts of energy and force through his voice. If he's not careful, he can level cities by speaking. In order to get around his power, he has developed a telepathic bond with his wife.
Medusa is queen of the Inhumans. Medusa's power is in her enhanced hair (unsurprisingly), which she can mentally command to do anything she wishes, like lift heavy objects, protect her from harm, whip her enemies, or subdue them.

Crystal is Medusa's younger sister. She has the power to manipulate the four elements — earth, air, fire, water — and mix them together if she wishes. [NOTE: also one time wife of X-Men's Quicksilver. Also married to Ronan the Accuser, of The Guardians of the Galaxy film]

Gorgon is Black Bolt's cousin. He's the muscle of the Royal Family and has bull's legs, a mutation caused by the mists. He creates earthquakes by stomping.

Karnak is a freaky little dude with face tattoos who's also one of Black Bolt's cousins. He has the power to find a weak point in any object, plan, or person. Do not mess with Karnak.

Triton is still another of Black Bolt's cousins. He's green. He looks like a fish and can breathe underwater. He also has super-strength.

Maximus the Mad. Black Bolt's brother, he's basically the Loki of the Inhumans. You shouldn't trust him, as he's always looking out for his best interests. He has mind-control powers.

Lockjaw is an alien bulldog and royal pet of the Inhumans. He has the power of teleportation.

What kind of cool stuff have the Inhumans done?

Well, Black Bolt once possessed an Infinity Gem (those glowing stones from so many Marvel movies). He's also part of Marvel's Illuminati, a group that has included heavy hitters like Tony Stark, Fantastic Four's Reed Richards, Dr. Strange, Namor, and X-Men's Charles Xavier.
