Blue Origin's "Goddard" was launched 11-13-06 as part of their New Shepard project. Blue Origin was founded by Jeff Bezos, who also founded Amazon.com.
Blue Origin has been the most secretive of all the private manned spaceflight companies, so when this was posted it caused quite a stir on the space forums.
The first flight was only to 285 feet to test the basic systems and its VTOL flight systems. Presumably it can also hover and translate side to side much like its technical predecessor the McDonnell Douglas DC-X, and many of DC-X's engineers now work for Blue Origin.
Is it me or does Goddard look like a Mars lander looking for a way to get there?
PS: they're hiring
