Help on a new open source project for GURPS

I'm looking to start programming a GURPS character builder for linux. I'll be using Gnome 2 as my development platform. The only problem is I have little to no experience in programming. Any suggestions on what language I should write this in? I know a little bit of Perl, but not much.

Anyone else here play GURPS?
