KNOPPIX? Anyone?

Hi,

Anyone has experience with KNOPPIX?
I want to build a harddrive-less HTPC but am wondering how good KNOPPIX is as a multimedia platform.

It has to be harddrive-less as harddrive would be the most noisy thing in there...

I've read only good things about Knoppix. Morphix is the Gnome equivalent. I would just look to see if it comes with MPlayer and you should be pretty set. I was considering giving both a whirl one of these days (if I ever get time to)

It comes with Xine at least I think.
I would have tried these out but I don't think they support Parhelia

I'm downloading Morphix with Gnome2.2 now. I'll give it a try, if it works (probably through Vesa driver) then I'll let you know. From what I know Morphix has the same hardware detection routines as Knoppix, so if it works on one, it should essentially work on the other.

Lack of Parhelia support is why I haven't really tried either yet.... but I was going to download it for a friend who is interested in trying out linux, so I figured I'd download a live CD.

Knoppix has some multimedia capabilities, but not much. Morphix is probably the better choice for this. And yes, Morphix is Knoppix with some replacements. Most live GNU/Linux versions i know are based on Knoppix.

But now to something completely different. I think you will run a silent PC with two ROM drives, but remember that most ROM drives are much louder than HDs. And Knoppix (and Morphix for that matter) access the CD frequently.

EDIT: And on a second thought, there are early drivers for the P available. Maybe you consider a silent harddrive after all?

Is there some sort of "set top box" linux distro there that are meant for multimedia playback?

I can say for certain that Morphix (HeavyGUI version) does come with Xine.

I can verify that KNOPPIX will work with the P. I have been using KNOPPIX 3.1 since it was released back in January.

I haven't tried DVD play back with it, but you can just modify it before you burn the ISO to a CD.
