1. Is it better to capture video using the VCR or through Avid? or is it the same?

2. How do you find out/change what compression ratio it is using?

I am using Premiere 5.1, but the capture works better in VCR.
Never tried Avid.
BTW, I'm using the Morgan codec only.

Avid only gives a few different capture options. Therefore you have more control using an external capture procedure. PC-VCR is (in my view) a pretty good starter. If you have more specific needs (for instance you are having problems with audio sync or > 2Gb captures) then a 3rd party capture app like AV_IO (or Reelcap, pick your favourite) may help out.

It's important to realise that there isn't a universal panacea, and for each individual requirement there are plenty of paths to follow. But the Matrox software gives a pretty good start

To check compression rates:

1) Open up PC-VCR
2) Click on the little gear (or right-click and choose properties)
3) Click on the Recording tab

You change the ratio via the slider and the "Capture Options" button. The PC-VCR might not let you choose the highest settings if you haven't run the HD benchmark yet.
